Offhand I find The Balrog to be more of a magical creature and Smaug to be more of a--powerful--animal. We hear of Smaug and other dragons being defeated by mortal Heroes--I don't easily imagine Bard slaying The Balrog. So, I should say The Balrog should be the victor but then I've never had a serious interest in _The Silmarillion_. Which of the two would you rather meet (I'd rather chance riddling with a dragon!)?
